To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has to introduce a compensation mechanism for crofters or farmers who suffer financial loss as a result of the presence of protected birds but whose land is not designated part of a site of special scientific interest.

We are currently considering a number of representations on this matter including representations from the Scottish Crofters Union and a number of hon. Members. I shall let the hon. Member know the outcome of our consideration in due course.
