§ Mr. Chris SmithTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish in theOfficial Report a full list of all those instances to date, under the terms of the Housing and Planning Act 1986, where a local authority has transferred management powers to a housing co-operative, housing association, or private landlord; and if he will indicate also all those instances where under the terms of the Act local authority tenants have organised themselves into a co-operative and requested recognition.
§ Mr. WaldegraveThere are 30 instances of a local authority transferring management powers to housing co-operatives within the terms of earlier legislation. Since the relevant section of the Housing and Planning Act 1986 came into force on 7 January 1987, nine applications have been made by local authorities seeking approval for the transfer of management powers to a housing co-operative, housing association or private landlord, of which two are 9W for renewal of earlier approvals. All these applications are currently being considered under the terms of the 1986 Act and I expect the first approvals to be issued shortly.
The Act makes no provision for local authority tenants to request recognition as a co-operative.
