HC Deb 09 November 1987 vol 122 cc30-1W
Dr. Moonie

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the estimated number of carriers, cases and deaths due to HIV for Scotland and Fife, by age and sex, for 1985 and 1986.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The numbers of AIDS cases and deaths in Scotland in 1985 and 1986 reported to the Communicable Diseases (Scotland) Unit are set out in the table.

AIDS cases Deaths
Male Female Male Female
1985 4 1
1986 6 1 7

It is estimated that, at the end of 1986, there were 30,000 to 40,000 carriers of HIV infection in the United Kingdom, but the proportion of this range who were located in Scotland has not been estimated. Of those persons who had been tested for HIV infection in Scotland, the numbers found to be HIV positive are set out in the table below:

Number
Persons tested and found to be positive from 1982 up to end of 1985 536
Persons tested and found to be positive in 1986 473
1,009

Details of the ages of the persons concerned and of the numbers of each sex found to be HIV positive are not available. Since the figures of AIDS cases and deaths for particular regions may be very low, and their publication may in consequence endanger medical confidentiality, geographical breakdowns are not published. Geographical breakdowns of numbers of persons tested and found to be HIV positive in 1985 and 1986 are not available.
