HC Deb 06 November 1987 vol 121 c933W
Mr. McCrady

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many roads were adopted by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland during 1986–87 in the following district council areas (i) Down district (all), (ii) Newry and Mourne (all County Down) and (iii) Banbridge (in the electoral wards of Bannside, Katesbridge, Dromore South, Dromore North, Quilly, Garran and Croob): and what is the policy about the adoption of roads.

Mr. Needham

The figures for the areas referred to are:

Number
Down 22
Newry and Mourne 8
Banbridge 2

The Department's policy on the adoption of roads stems from the Private Streets (NI) Order 1980. Where the development of land for which planning permission is needed requires the construction of streets, the Department determines the width, position and arrangement of the streets. When such streets are completed in accordance with the determined layout and to the prescribed standards they are adopted by the Department after a 12-month maintenance period.
