HC Deb 05 November 1987 vol 121 c868W
Mr. Hood

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what measures the Government are taking to protect the elderly in their homes from violent crime.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Police forces are always ready to advise individual householders about appropriate security measures to reduce the opportunities for this type of crime. Specific measures currently being taken include(a) the campaign to promote neighbourhood watch, which aims to prevent housebreaking and vandalism through improved physical security watchfulness and mutual help within the community; and (b) the national initiative by my Department and the Manpower Services Commission, under the community programme. to promote crime prevention projects including practical improvements in home security for the elderly, the disabled and the disadvantaged.
