Mr. Cousins

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total expenditure on work in the prison building and refurbishment programme since 1983–84; what this expenditure was in each standard region; and how much of this expenditure since 1983–84 was placed with (a) architects and (b) quantity surveyors located in the northern standard region.

Mr. John Patten

The total expenditure on the prison building and refurbishment programme from 1983–84 to end September 1987 was £325.16 million, of which £166.68 million was on new prisons, and £158.48 million on the refurbishment and extension of existing prisons. These figures do not include professional fees. Regional figures are available only at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Cousins

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what percentage, by value of work in the prison building and refurbishment programme in the years since 1983–84, was undertaken in the northern standard region; and what percentage, by value of work, in the prison building and refurbishment programme in the years since 1983–84, was placed with (a) architects and (b) quantity surveyors in firms located in the northern standard region.
