Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will introduce legislation to provide for a statutory consultation procedure in relation to applications to the Forestry Commission for planting approval under the forestry grant scheme and to require the commission to take account of any observations and representations made by voluntary bodies; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. and learned Friend is not persuaded that such legislation is necessary or desirable.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many applications for forestry planting licences in Scotland were objected to by local authorities and other statutory bodies, respectively, in each of the last five years and 1987 to date; and how many were refused as a result.
