HC Deb 05 November 1987 vol 121 c831W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list, in relation to the 20 delegations of councillors which the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State the hon. Member for Wiltshire, North (Mr. Needham) saw concerning the discussion paper on elected representatives and the democratic process in Northern Ireland, those proposals which were (a) proposed and (b) supported by which delegations.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer, 2 November 1987]: The purpose of my meetings was to explore views on what might be done in response to widespread concern about the problems posed by the presence in council chambers of councillors who support violence. Given the exploratory and wide-ranging nature of our discussions, it would not be practical or appropriate to attribute specific views to individual delegations. All views were, however, taken into account in preparing the discussion paper.
