HC Deb 04 November 1987 vol 121 cc703-4W
Mr. Winnick

asked the Attorney-General if he will give a detailed breakdown of all the legal costs accorded in the United Kingdom and outside in taking action to stop the publication of "Spycatcher."

The Attorney-General

I shall break down the total amount of costs to public funds to date of the court action in Australia into two categories: the first, travelling and subsistence for officials, is approximately £65,000; the second, legal fees, is approximately £369,000.

Travelling and subsistence costs have not yet been incurred in respect of the actions in New Zealand and Hong Kong; nor have they been incurred in repect of the action here against The Guardian, The Observer and The Sunday Times. The total costs to public funds to date of these actions remain as in my answer of 22 October to the hon. Member for Newham, North-West (Mr. Banks).
