Mr. McLeish

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much has been spent in Scotland at 1986 prices, on (a) regional development grant and (b) regional selective assistance for each year from 1979.

Total payments of regional selective assistance and regional development grant, at 1986 prices, to firms in Scotland between 1979–80 and 1986–87 are set out in the table below:

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will reconsider the exclusion of Glenrothes new town from the areas designated in Scotland for regional development grants; and if he will make a statement.

My righ hon. Friend is aware of concern about the assisted area status of Glenrothes new town but no review of assisted area designation is planned at the present time.
