HC Deb 04 November 1987 vol 121 c786W
Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what research is currently being undertaken by his Department with a view to reducing noise made by heavy goods vehicles with respect to (a) bodies, (b) engines (c) tyres and (d) transmissions.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The quiet heavy vehicle (QH V90) project—a joint Government and industry initiative to research and develop methods of quietening heavy goods vehicles—should be virtually completed during 1988. During this programme a range of noise reduction measures have been examined, but not tyre noise. Trials of improved road surfaces, aimed at meeting a number of criteria including reduced tyre noise, are continuing.
