Mr. Darling

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what information he has as to the total cost to each local authority in Scotland, excluding expenditure on concessionary travel (a) of providing bus services in 1985–86 and (b) of payments made to bus operators in the period from 26 October 1986 to 31 March 1987.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The amount of revenue support by each local authority for bus services shown in their final outturn for 1985–86 is as follows:

Regional/Islands Council £ million

Central 1.271
Dumfries and Galloway 1.116
Fife 0.446
Grampian -0.276
Highland 1.156

Tayside 1.504

Figures are not available for local authority expenditure on payments to bus operators in the period from 26 October 1986 to 31 March 1987, but estimates which have been made suggest that payments have been running at an annual rate of around £15 million.
