§ Mr. Harry Greenwayasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what profit the British Council's direct teaching of English earns annually, taking into account the overheads incurred in London; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. EggarThe British Council has 51 direct teaching operations in 32 countries. Their global operations are not always in surplus. In 1986–87, for example, there was a deficit of £0.2 million on a total turnover of £21.3 million after overseas running and investment costs and London overheads were taken into account. But for 1987–88, the council forsees a surplus of £0.3 million for re-investment in its teaching operation itself and to finance more cultural activities in the countries where the surplus is earned.
