HC Deb 02 November 1987 vol 121 cc542-3W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when a representative of Her Majesty's Government last met Mr. Sam Nujoma, President of the South-West Africa People's Organisation; and whether any future discussions are planned.

Mrs. Chalker

I met Mr. Nujoma on 26 October. No future discussions are planned.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what matters were discussed at the last meeting between a representative of her Majesty's Government and Mr. Sam Nujoma, President of South-West Africa People's Organisation.

Mrs. Chalker

Details of such exchanges must remain confidential. But the points which I put to Mr. Nujoma included our concern at alleged human rights abuses by SWAPO and condemnation of violence from whatever quarter, as well as our support for United Nations Security Council resolution 435.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he last made representations to the South-West Africa People's Organisation concerning the detention without trial or legal representation of 100 Namibians by the South-West Africa People's Organisation in camps in Angola and Zambia; and whether he has any further information about these detainees.

Mrs. Chalker

When I saw Mr. Nujoma on 26 October I again expressed our concern at alleged human rights abuses in SWAPO refugee camps in Angola and Zambia. We have no independent information on conditions in the camps.
