asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make it his policy that variable premiums will he retained in any reforms of the European Economic Community sheepmeat regime accepted by Her Majesty's Government.

I attach considerable importance to the system for paying variable premium to sheep farmers in Great Britain: it generates confidence; encourages orderly marketing and the presentation of good quality lambs; and helps producers' cash flow. In the forthcoming negotiations I shall be stressing these points.
