HC Deb 02 November 1987 vol 121 c581W
77. Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his Department's policy on the question of the elimination of radioactive discharges from nuclear plants.

Mr. Moynihan

The total elimination of radioactivity in discharges from nuclear plants is impossible. Government policy is to ensure that discharges are reduced to levels which are as low as reasonably achievable. The authorising Departments are currently engaged on a programme of reviewing the liquid and gaseous authorisations for all nuclear installations in the United Kingdom, but operators are required to ensure the best practicable means to improve performance within the discharge limits set.
