Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received about the possible closure of the London telephone exchange for deaf people; what plans he has to assist its continuance as a facility for deaf people; what discussions he has had with British Telecom about this exchange and the possible provision of similar facilities in other parts of the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

I refer the hon. Member to my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Mid-Staffordshire (Mr. Heddle) on 21 October. We have received representations on this matter from 151 hon. Members and 49 other people. We have also received a petition containing 247 names of people living mainly in the Spalding area.
