HC Deb 02 November 1987 vol 121 cc549-50W
Mr. Home Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people were employed in cheese making and in other creameries in Scotland in each year since 1980.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Information in the form requested is not held centrally. However, the employment census of manufacturing industries conducted in 1981 and 1984 discloses that 3,762 and 3,103 persons respectively were employed in the preparation of milk and milk products in Scotland.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The outcome of negotiations on the Commission's proposals for reforming the EC sheepmeat regime will have an important bearing on future support arrangements for the Scottish sheep industry. In these negotiations the Government are seeking particularly to protect the interests of traditional sheep producers and to reject any measures which might discriminate against our industry.
