HC Deb 05 May 1987 vol 115 c314W
Mrs. Clwyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prosecutions have been brought against private individuals and organisations for the illegal tapping of telephone calls since 1983; and how many of these prosecutions resulted in convictions.

Mr. Hurd

The information which is held centrally, which may be incomplete, indicates that there were no prosecutions or convictions since 1983 for the illegal tapping of telephones under either the Telecommunications Act 1984 or the Interception of Communications Act 1985. Information for 1986 or 1987 is not yet available.

Mrs. Clwyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many complaints his Department has received from private individuals and organisations since 1983 concerning the suspected tapping of telephone calls.

Mr. Hurd

No record has been kept of the number of such complaints.
