asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give details of the achievements of his Department with respect to science and technology since 1979; and if he will make a statement on his plans for the future.

asked the Secretary of state for Education and Science (1) if he will give the average cost per pupil currently assisted under the assisted places scheme, for the most recent year for which figures are available;

(2) what information he has about the average cost per pupil in the independent schools sector, for the most recent year for which figures are available;

(3) if he will give the average cost per pupil by local authority in Greater Manchester and for England, for the most recent year for which figures are available.

Mr. Dunn

(i) The average cost to my Department per assisted place pupil is £1,759 for the 1986–87 school year.

(ii) No information is available on the average cost per pupil in the independent school sector.

(iii) The net institutional expenditure per pupil in 15 maintained primary and secondary schools for Greater Manchester and for England was as follows in 1985–86, the latest year for which information is available. Net institutional expenditure does not include the cost of school meals, central administration and inspection costs, capital expenditure or the financing costs of capital.
