HC Deb 05 May 1987 vol 115 c361W
42. Mr. Douglas

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the prospects for employment at Rosyth and Devonport dockyards now that the approved contractors are in the yards.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

The Government remain committed to a core programme of work for Rosyth and Devonport dockyards to maintain vital strategic assets. The dockyards will also be in a position to tender in competition for further work from the unallocated MOD ship repair programme and to bid for other work.

Subject to maintenance of the required strategic capacity, levels of employment at the dockyards are matters for the commercial management.
