HC Deb 05 May 1987 vol 115 cc304-5W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the current situation in Mozambique; and what further action Her Majesty's Government intend to take to relieve the situation.

Mr. Chris Patten

I am deeply concerned at the scale of the present suffering in Mozambique. The Government are playing a full part in the international effort to alleviate it. In addition to our longer-term development assistance programme for Mozambique, we have offered over £11 million as emergency aid over the past few months. We stand ready to assist further. I will be discussing the situation with the President of Mozambique during his visit this week.
