HC Deb 05 May 1987 vol 115 cc323-4W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the outcome of the talks on Belize between the United Kingdom, Belize and Guatemala, in Miami.

Mr. Eggar

Talks between Belize and Guatemala in Miami on 29 April were held in a frank and cordial atmosphere. British officials attended as observers. The delegations of Belize and Guatemala put forward proposals and agreed to report to their respective Governments.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make it his policy that the garrison in Belize shall be maintained as long as considered necessary by the Government of Belize.

Mr. Eggar

As I told the hon. Member on 19 May 1986, it was agreed with the Belize Government at independence in 1981 that the British garrison will remain in Belize for an appropriate period.
