HL Deb 25 March 1987 vol 486 cc282-3WA
Baroness Jeger

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many unemployed claimants will be entitled to back-payments of benefit as a result of the decision of the Court of Appeal on 5th March 1987; what is the total sum involved, and what future adjustments they intend to make as a result of this decision.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health and Social Security (Baroness Trumpington)

Information on the number of claimants whose benefit was restricted by regulations in force between December 1984 and April 1985 was not collected. We estimate that roughly 10,000 unemployed claimants were affected who will he entitled to arrears amounting to roughly £1 million. The regulations affected by the Court of Appeal's judgment have been revoked by subsequent legislation.
