§ Mr. Deakinsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will consider introducing legislation to ensure that annual elections to local authorities are held in those local authorities currently elected en bloc every three or four years.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggWe have no present plans for such legislation. We are considering a recommendation by the88W Widdicombe committee of inquiry into the conduct of local authority business that all councillors in England and Wales should he elected every four years by whole-council elections based on single-member electoral areas.
