§ Mr. Maddenasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he intends to amend the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1982 to extend the mandatory requirement to possess a recognised qualification as a teacher of the deaf to teachers working in the peripatetic and advisory services with hearing-impaired children.
§ Mr. DunnMy right hon. Friend will consider whether the requirement for mandatory qualifications for teachers of the deaf should be extended to cover teachers working in the peripatetic and advisory services. However, any extension could not be done simply by amending the 1982 regulations. It would require an amendment to section 27 of the Education Act 1980 to enable regulations to be made to cover the qualifications of teachers other than those in schools and establishments of further education.
