asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the contract for airborne fisheries patrols between August 1986 and May 1z987, giving a summary of the costs of these arrangements. the terms of that contract, the type of aircraft and radar equipment used and the standard of surveillance and enforcement achieved; and if he will list any changes he intends to make to these arrangements from May.

From 1 September 1986 a Dornier 228 equipped with Bendix 1500 surveillance radar was chartered for the period until 31 may 1987.

The cost of the charter for the six months up to 28 February 1987 was £413,000. As an interim solution the Dornier has achieved a satisfactory level of surveillance and support for protection and enforcement From 1 June 1987 a Fokker F27–200 will be acquired and thereafter employed in this role. Tenders for operating the Fokker F27 are due to be opened on 20 March 1987 and a decision announced in early-mid April 1987.
