HC Deb 18 March 1987 vol 112 c535W
Mr. Butterfill

asked the Paymaster General if he will make a statement on the prospects for creating jobs in the tourism sector by means of Government funding in areas where industrial employment is depressed.

Mr. Trippier

We are proposing to make an additional £5 million available in 1987–88 to the English tourist Board and the British Tourist Authority so that they can expand their marketing and development activities and continue to give priority to encouraging tourism in areas of unexploited potential and high unemployment. Some £2.6 million of this will be used to extend the ETB's section 4 scheme of assistance for tourism projects. The scheme has proved to be highly cost effective in creating jobs at local and regional level and there is scope for it to make a significant contribution to the creation of new sources of employment in areas experiencing a decline in traditional industrial employment.
