HC Deb 18 March 1987 vol 112 c548W
47. Mr. Maples

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his latest assessment of prospects for a peaceful settlement to the Iraq-Iran war; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Renton

We have consistently made clear our desire to see an early negotiated settlement to this conflict. Regrettably there are no indications at present that Iran and Iraq are both willing to agree to a ceasefire and enter into negotiations leading to a peaceful settlement of the conflict. We continue to believe the best way forward is via the good offices of the United Nations Secretary General.

63. Mr. Coleman

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had with his European Economic Community counterparts, and particularly France, on the supply of arms and equipment to either side in the Iran-Iraq war.

Mr. Renton

The Iran-Iraq conflict has figured prominently in discussions at all levels within European political co-operation, including the recent ministerial meeting on 23 February. We continue to use all suitable opportunities to urge all countries both within the EC and outside, to adopt a policy as strict as ours on the supply of defence equipment.
