HC Deb 16 March 1987 vol 112 c389W
Sir Philip Holland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list in the Official Report the nationalised industries that have been privatised since June 1979; and what percentage of the public sector industrial undertakings in existence in June 1979 that represents.

Mr. Norman Lamont

Privatisation has reduced the proportion of GDP accounted for by the state sector of industry in 1979 by about one third. The nationalised industries which have been privatised since 1979 are:

  • Associated British Ports
  • British Aerospace
  • British Airways
  • British Gas
  • British Telecom
  • National Freight Corporation

Some businesses, which were formerly parts of nationalised industries, have also been privatised. These include Britoil, Enterprise Oil and British Shipbuilders' warship yards. Other state-owned companies which have been privatised include Amersham International, Cable and Wireless, and Jaguar.
