HL Deb 16 March 1987 vol 485 cc1305-6WA
Lord Wyatt of Weeford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their estimate of the numbers of patients with end-stage renal failure dying yearly through lack (a) of treatment facilities and (b) of kidney transplants; what is the number of kidney patients awaiting transplants; and by how much it goes up each month.

Baroness Trumpington

It is impossible to estimate the number of people who died of kidney failure because suitable treatment was not available. Patients waiting for transplants are usually maintained on dialysis. The waiting list for kidney transplants fluctuates from month to month. At 28th February 1987 the number of United Kingdom patients on the waiting list totalled 3,259.
