HC Deb 13 March 1987 vol 112 cc322-3W
Mrs. Clwyd

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what information he has as to which Soviet short-range missiles are within range of the United Kingdom and as to how many of such missiles are currently stationed in Eastern Europe.

Mr. Stanley

The Soviet Union has a variety of air and sea launched missiles with nuclear and conventional warheads which could be launched within range of the United Kingdom. The only Soviet shorter-range land-based ballistic missile with a nuclear or conventional warhead capable of reaching the United Kingdom from its existing deployment position in East Germany and Czechoslovakia is the more accurate version of the Scaleboard missile (SS22). As to numbers of Scaleboard I cannot at present add to what was said in paragraph 23 of annex A of the statement on the Defence Estimates 1986 vol. I (Cmnd. 9763).
