HC Deb 13 March 1987 vol 112 cc312-3W
Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Transport when he now expects the first two service areas on the M25 motorway to be fully operational; and what slippage this represents from their planned date of opening.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

South Mimms service area is already open for the sale of fuel. I expect that it will be fully open in May, though some additional facilities will be provided later for heavy goods vehicles. We are aiming for opening of the Thurrock area in late 1988 or early 1989. Progress depends on the degree of difficulty with geotechnical problems. Compared with 1985 targets, South Mimms will be six months and Thurrock over a year late.
