HC Deb 13 March 1987 vol 112 c328W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the overall cost of building the new 800-bed hospital proposed to be built at Norwich, on the same site as the existing Hallesdon hospital, together with the proposed new psychiatric unit at Hallesdon and consequent modifications at St. Andrews West Norwich, Cromer, Kelling, North Walsham and Aylsham hospitals.

Mrs. Currie

The proposal submitted by Norwich health authority to build a new district general hospital (including a 120-bed acute mental illness unit) on the site of Hellesdon hospital is estimated to cost £36.9 million for building and engineering works. About £0.5 million is to be spent in maintenance and up-grading work at St. Andrews hospital. Consequent modifications at the other hospitals are unlikely to be required before 1995 and it is not possible at present to estimate the cost of works needed after this date.

Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what effect the construction of the proposed new 800-bed hospital for the Norwich health authority will have on the other hospitals in Norfolk, with particular reference to plans for the future of Cromer, North Walsham, Kelling and Aylsham hospitals; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

Norwich health authority's proposals for a new district general hospital would not entail changes at any of the hospitals mentioned until phase II of the new hospital were completed in 1995. Subject to formal consultations, these hospitals would then become GP/community hospitals as part of the authority's strategy for health services in the district.
