HC Deb 09 March 1987 vol 112 c34W
Mr. O'Brien

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what recent representations he has received on the Government's proposal to repeal the Trade Descriptions Act 1972; and if he will make a statement:

(2) if his Department has carried out a study into the effects that the repeal of the Trade Descriptions Act 1972 will have on British industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Howard

I have received in response to my Department's consultation letter of 4 December 1986 a wide range of representations from industry, commerce and trade, consumer protection bodies, enforcement authorities and other interested parties about the scope for successor arrangements to the 1972 Act. A number of industries have made their views known on the perceived effect of the repeal. I am currently considering the various suggestions for successor arrangements and will inform the House in due course how the Government intend to proceed in the light of them.
