Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will publish a table showing for each of the last 10 years the number of (i) sequestrations and (ii) bankruptcies against individuals and companies, respectively, in Scotland.

1 Sequestrations are the Scottish equivalent of bankruptcies. The figures cover all individuals and partnerships. Separate figures in respect of unincorporated businesses are not available.
2 Includes compulsory and creditors' voluntary liquidations — the two types which involve insolvency.
3 Provisions of the Bankruptcy Scotland Act 1985 which came into force on 1 April 1986 provided for public funds to be made available to compensate Trustees dealing with sequestrations with no assets.
