HC Deb 09 March 1987 vol 112 c79W
36. Mr. Stott

asked the Minister for the Arts what his most recent estimate is of local authority spending on the arts in the north-west region.

Mr. Luce

Statistics collected by the Department of the Environment show local authority current expenditure of £56.5 million and capital expenditure of £11.0 million in 1985–86 on museums, galleries and libraries in the north western region.

It is impossible to identify precise figures for performing arts, but estimates for leisure and recreation are published annually by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and are available in the Library.

45. Mr. Litherland

asked the Minister for the Arts what is his estimate of the revenue derived from arts-based tourism in the north-west region.

Mr. Luce

I have no breakdown in this amount of detail, but the subject will be covered in the survey of the economic importance of the arts, to be published later this year.
