HC Deb 09 March 1987 vol 112 c26W
Mr. Boyes

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government's support for the conclusion of an intermediate range nuclear force agreement is dependent on the elimination of disparities in conventional forces between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the Warsaw treaty organisation in Europe.

The Prime Minister

NATO is not imposing any formal negotiating linkage between the conclusion of an intermediate range nuclear force agreement and the elimination of disparities in conventional forces between NATO and the Warsaw pact. But, as President Reagan and I agreed at Camp David in November 1986, reductions in nuclear weapons would increase the importance of eliminating conventional disparities. This was subsequently reflected in the communiqués of the NATO ministerial meetings the following month.
