HC Deb 09 March 1987 vol 112 cc6-7W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how much EEC butter and beef, by weight and estimated value, has been distributed and remains to be distributed and under what methods and principles, in each of the eight counties of Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Procurement of these products from appropriate sources, and distribution to individuals is being undertaken by charitable organisations. They are making the necessary local arrangements. Products must be distributed free of charge to the most needy for their own use. These include those on supplementary benefit and family income supplement; and other groups of people who are either homeless, living in hostels, attending feeding centres, receiving meals-on-wheels or very disadvantaged in other ways.

B. Schools having classes where some of the teaching is through the medium of Welsh 33 130 53 4 9 6 7

Note: At September 1985. The mode of instruction in primary schools varies widely according to linguistic background and a school may have classes in more than one category. However, each school appears once only in this Table, under the appropriate heading. Thus a school entered in line B as having classes where some of the teaching is through the medium of Welsh, does not have any classes where Welsh is the sole or main medium of teaching (line A).

Information on the number of all pupils attending the schools shown in the above table are not readily available.

However, figures in the following table indicate the number of pupils in classes where some or all of the teaching is through the medium of

Welsh:

Number of pupils1
Clwyd Dyfed Gwent Gwynedd Mid Glamorgan Powys South Glamorgan West Glamorgan
Pupils in classes where Welsh is the sole or main medium of instruction 3,514 5,418 519 10,616 5,038 810 1,510 1,943
Number of pupils in classes where some of the teaching is through the medium of Welsh 2,733 8,482 6,671 524 498 797 774
1 At September 1985.

Comparable data on pupil numbers receiving instruction through the medium of Welsh is not available for secondary schools.

The number of secondary schools using Welsh as a medium for teaching in years I to V, however, is as follows:
Number of schools1
Clwyd Dyfed Gwent Gwynedd Mid Glamorgan Powys South Glamorgan West Glamorgan
Welsh used as a medium for teaching:
in one or two subjects 3 1 2
in three or four subjects 3 2 1
in five subjects or more 4 10 18 3 3 1 2
