§ Mr. Sheermanasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he proposes any changes in the enforcement of the law relating to drink-driving offences in the light of the research findings relating to the risk of detection for excess alcohol offences by the Cranfield institute of technology, a copy of which has been sent to him; and if he will make a statement on the factors to which he attributes the difference between those figures and his Department's earlier estimates on the same subject.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggWe are satisfied that the police have sufficient powers to enforce the law on drink driving effectively, and within those powers enforcement is a matter for individual chief officers of police. The Cranfield Institute of Technology study, published in 1984, was based on interviews in two towns whereas the study by the Home Office Research and Planning Unit, also published' in 1984, drew on data collected in the national British crime survey.
