Mr. McCrindle

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will state the figures for United Kingdom Government support for civil research and development in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986; how this compares with Government support for civil research and development in other European Economic Community countries; and if he will make a statement.

The available information relates to central Government expenditure on research and development for civil objectives and is given in the table below. It is shown at current prices and exchange rates using purchasing power parities which gives more meaningful comparisons than market exchange rates.
