§ Mr. Ralph Howellasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give figures for the years 1982–83, 1983–84, 1984–85 and 1985o–86 for the average overall cost of a local government employee; and if he will break down the average cost into pay, national insurance, superannuation, and other costs, such as office space, heating, lighting, car allowance, travel allowance, etc.

The comparable net figures (net of board and lodging payments made to authorities by or on behalf of households in receipt of supplementary benefit and net of any reasonable charges required by authorities of other households) would be £9,500 for London and £4,000 for non-metropolitan districts.
