HC Deb 04 March 1987 vol 111 c593W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his estimate of the net savings to the United Kingdom of the increases in university fees for overseas students since 1979.

Mr. Walden

The ending of the indiscriminate subsidy to overseas students from September 1980 was estimated to lead to savings in university funding of about £90 million annually at current prices. To be offset against this is targeted support for some categories of overseas students at a cost of about £14 million a year.
