HC Deb 04 March 1987 vol 111 cc636-7W
62. Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he expects to receive the results of his research project into the causes of homelessness.

Mr. Tracey

We expect to receive by the end of March 1988 the results of the homelessness study recently commissioned from the university of Birmingham's centre for urban and regional studies.

71. Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish a White Paper with proposals to reduce homelessness in England and Wales.

Mr. Tracey

My right hon. Friend has no plans to do so. On action against homelessness, I refer the hon. Member to the reply given on 16 January to the hon. Member for Liverpool, West. Derby (Mr. Wareing) at column331.

Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, pursuant to his reply of Friday 16 January, Official Report, column 331, what is his estimate of the comparative public sector costs of housing homeless families in non-metropolitan areas by (a) providing them with newly built council dwellings, (b) providing them with dwellings acquired from the private sector and improved for letting and (c) providing them with bed and breakfast accommodation.

Mr. Tracey

The comparable figures for non-metropolitan areas in England are around £3,700 and £3,600 in the first year, and an average of some £15 per household day, respectively.
