HC Deb 04 March 1987 vol 111 cc637-8W
68. Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what recent action he has taken in support of the Gleneagles agreement on sport and apartheid.

Mr. Tracey

All governing bodies of sport have been advised of the Government's commitment to the Gleneagles agreement. They are aware that Her Majesty's Government discourages sporting contact with South Africa, and that Government and Sports Council Policy, most recently reaffirmed in January, ensures that no public funds are made available to support such contacts. I only rarely need to approach individual bodies to repeat or clarify that advice.
