Mr. Lester

asked the Paymaster General if he will provide a breakdown of family expenditure on items such as food, housing costs and so on distinguishing between manual and non-manual households.

Notes:

  1. (1) Manual households are here defined as those households in which the head of household is an employee or self-employed in a manual occupation.
  2. (2) Non-manual households arc here defined as those households in which the head of household is an employee or self-employed in a non-manual occupation, or a member of HM forces.
  3. (3) Households in which the head of household was retired or unoccupied (2,764 in the 1985 survey) are excluded from this table. Unoccupied heads of household include school leavers who have never worked and those unemployed for more than 12 months.
