asked the Paymaster General what has been the increase in self-employment and new businesses in Yorkshire and Humberside since 1979.

The number of self-employed persons in Yorkshire and Humberside is provisionally estimated to have risen by 108,000, from 134,000 in June 1979 to 242,000 in September 1986.

The number of businesses registered for VAT in the Yorkshire and Humberside region is estimated to have risen by approximately 9,200, from 102,000 at the end of 1979 to 111,200 at the end of 1984. These are the most up-to-date figures currently available.
