HC Deb 29 June 1987 vol 118 c22W
73. Mr. Burt

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans the Government have for future assistance to Pakistan.

Mr. Chris Patten

We have a substantial and growing aid programme to Pakistan, concentrated in sectors to which the Government of Pakistan attach high priority.

In April I had discussions in London with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Mohammad Khan Junejo, and we agreed that the future programme would focus on irrigation and land drainage, agricultural development, power supply, primary health care (including population, welfare and water supply and sanitation) and education. Particular efforts will be made to direct assistance to benefit the rural poor.
