§ Mrs. Mahonasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the total cost to his Department of payments to residents to enable them to stay in private residential homes.
§ Mr. PortilloProvisional estimates show that in February 1986 the total annual cost of supplementary benefit payments to people in private and voluntary residential care and nursing homes was £459 million. It is not possible to separate out amounts paid to people in private homes alone.
§ Mrs. Mahonasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the private residential homes that have been opened since 1979 in Halifax; and if he will break down the list to indicate the purpose and the number of beds.
§ Mrs. CurrieI regret that information is not available centrally in the form requested. Details held on residential homes relate to the numbers of homes, places and residents, by client group, within each local authority social services area. In 1979 there were eight private homes for the elderly, with a total 100 places, in the Calderdale district. In 1986 the number of such homes had increased to 22 and the number of places to 306. There are no private homes in Calderdale for client groups other than the elderly. The "Directory of Private Hospitals and Health Services" includes a list of registered homes in Calderdale and elsewhere. A copy of the latest edition, published in november 1986, is in the Library.
