HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 cc552-3W
Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will list spending on regional selective assistance for each region, Scotland and Wales in 1986–87 and proposed spending in 1987–88.

Mr. Butcher

Provisional figures for payments of regional selective assistance (RSA) in 1986–87 are as follows:

Area £ million

North West 19.2
Yorkshire and Humberside 10.0
East Midlands 2.2
West Midlands 9.9
South West 5.2
Scotland 35.4

Estimates for future expenditure are not broken down by English region: the actual distribution will depend on the level of demand. The RSA provision for each country in 1987–88, as set out in the Supply Estimates, is as follows:

£ million
England 89.3
Scotland 46.8
Wales 36.1
Great Britain Total 172.2

Notes:

(1) RSA has been interpreted as industrial and training grants.

(2) All figures are gross, before deducting recoveries and European Community receipts under the European regional development fund.
